Bad Winter? No such thing!
It’s no secret that Niseko is experiencing a slow start to the winter. But that does not mean there’s no good skiing to be had in Hokkaido, you’ve just got to get out there and find it.
Over the past few weeks, our guides have been checking out their favourite spots to test conditions and see how things are shaping up.
Last week- in which the region saw no considerable snowfall – our Guides and photographers; Tomek, Angus and Elliott, went for a mission to Shiribetsu Dake in search of fresh tracks.
By coincidence, the three of us had the day off and wanted to check conditions in the backcountry whilst getting a few turns in at the same time. By the time we had mobilised (it was a day off!), time was ticking so we quickly grabbed snacks at Lawsons and headed East towards Rusutsu. From the trailhead, the skin track winds up to the ridge where we dropped onto the western side of the ridge and made our way to the top.
Under two hours later we were stood on top of Shiribetsu admiring the 360 degree views and planning our lines back down. From the peak there are so many great lines to pick from depending on the time of day, wind direction, previous weather etc. We each picked a line and ripped the face to pieces one by one. Before we knew it, we were back at the car and ready to head back to town.
Only 45 minutes from the Niseko Photography and Guiding office, Shiribetsu has some epic ski lines across all aspects from its modest 1,107m high peak. Some of the steepest and deepest zones in the area can be found on this little volcano, which is one of the reasons why we offer backcountry guiding on Shiribetsu.
